CINCINNATI — Procter Gamble, the consumer product powerhouse behind the Folgers brand, is putting its muscle behind a cup-at-a- time brewing machine that it says will allow consumers to make their own coffeehouse-style coffee at home. PG has teamed with brewing machine makers Black Decker, Krups, Mr. Coffee and Hamilton Beach for its new “Home Cafe” product line unveiled Tuesday. The new machines will allow people at home to brew single servings of cafe-style coffee from the specially designed packets.
PATERSON, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–July 7, 1997–Just Great Coffee Inc. (OTC BB:JGCI) is proud to announce that it has been chosen by Isoworth Ltd. of England, as one of the key suppliers for its innovative new BevStar beverage machine which will be shown for the first time in North America at the National Coffee Services Association Show in Chicago on July 17 to 19. The BevStar system gives a fresh drink on demand so there is no more waiting for a cup of coffee or hot tea. JGCIs Gourmet Liquid Coffee Concentrates and Ready-to-Use Espressos were developed on that same premise. Therefore, the fit between JGCIs coffee concentrates and the BevStar is more than complementary. The BevStar machine, featuring Just Great Coffee(tm) can be seen at the Cordley-Temprite stand (Booth 704) at the NCSA Show. Just Great Coffee Inc. is a unique and innovative coffee company that has successfully developed a product line of gourmet liquid coffee concentrates and ready-to-use espresso based on a proprietary manufacturing process. The company has also developed an automatic machine (patent pending) that will dispense coffee, espresso, cappuccino or flavored coffees at the press of a button utilizing their concentrates in addition to the Barista Coffee Bar airport system.
Business Editors, Food/Beverage Writers Many consumers who used to be satisfied with only hot espresso drink options now request iced espresso drinks as well. Iced espresso beverage demand has soared 20 percent in the last two years, according to a 2001 survey by the National Coffee Association. To help commercial venues meet this increasing consumer demand, Acorto, Inc., a worldwide leader in espresso machines, has introduced a significant breakthrough with the 1500s Elite, a sophisticated, fully automatic espresso machine that can produce iced lattes with the same ease as hot espresso drinks.

Competing against the big box retailers is a challenge for Kansas small-town businesses, but state programs can help their owners work toward success. “There are so many challenges that face small mom-and-pop or individual business owners,” said Jeanne Stinson, state coordinator for the Kansas Main Street Program. “Theyre faced with huge competition from the big box stores and most of them, I think, in Kansas have learned to live with that competition. Its not going to go away.” “Promotional activities are one of those four points,” she said. “We also look to the organization itself — their group. Who is doing this work and making sure that its adequately funded, that they have the ability to do their advertising and to make assistance to businesses.”

(Taboo Records) The renowned RB/jazz singer Angela Bofill interprets a version of the Benny More bolero Cómo Fué beautifully done in Spanish. The singer draws here from her own Puerto Rican-Cuban roots to embrace and deliver it with a special RB nuance, and Mark Levine adds his piano to the piece. Particularly impressive are selections from the self-titled 1974 album by José Chepito Areas on Columbia. Guarafeo is a guajira groove with spirited lead vocals by Norma Arias. Buscando La Gente, a jam co-written by Chepito with Bay Area Latin music pioneer Carlos Federico, reveals a driving 6/8 section and awesome percussion breaks. Eric Bermen delivers a solid piano solo on the tune and provide mean montunos throughout the album. Props to guitarist Eddy Ramírez for the Santana touch.

But Blahnik has the solution: a butt-kicking, circuit-style strength routine that works your entire body in 10 minutes using one piece of equipment. The device is the Smith machine: safe, simple to use, incredibly versatile and ideal for all fitness levels. The routine, adapted from Blahniks Serious Results video (Collage video, 1999), features five powerhouse moves that work several major muscle groups at once, burning more calories than most typical weight-machine moves and delivering tremendous toning and strength benefits. To round out the program, Blahnik has also included a series of 10-minute mini cardio blasts. But theres nothing small about any part of his program — except, of course, for the time commitment. how it works Youll combine a Smith machine with a flat bench. By using both ends of the bench, varying the bar height and lifting your body weight rather than weight plates, you can move quickly from one exercise to the next.
Starting an exercise programme is the easy bit, keeping it going takes a bit of incentive. Try these methods to help stay motivated: 1. Train with someone. Having an arrangement with someone means you are less likely to skip a session, even if the weathers terrible. 2. Schedule exercise into the weeks ahead. If you make diary entries to commit to specific classes or sessions, you are more likely to go. 3. Relieve boredom. If you are counting the seconds or number of reps until you are finished, try to focus on something else. Listen to some music or a language tape.
Tighten thighs and buttocks by standing with you chair in front of you. Hold back of the chair, keep feet hip distance apart and ensure your hips and shoulders are above one another. Lower your bum as if sitting. Hold for five seconds and squeeze the buttocks. Repeat 15 times. Using a stable chair, place your hands next to your hips at the edge (fingers facing forwards) and move hips to the edge of the chair. Bend elbows back (not to side), lowering your body until the line of your hips and knees is at 90 degrees to the chair. Repeat ten times Try push-ups, sitting in your chair twisting from the waist. Incorporate weights by using water bottles to do biceps curls and straight arm lifts.

Some epidemiologic studies have associated higher intakes of the antioxidant nutrients, especially vitamin E, with reduced risks of coronary heart disease. In some studies, this association has been observed for dietary vitamin E, but in other instances, the relationship was seen only in persons taking high doses of vitamin E as supplements. Protective effects of the other antioxidant nutrients - vitamin C and carotenoids - have also been observed in some epidemiological studies, but not in others. In the study population as a whole, there appeared to be a trend toward reduced coronary risk with higher vitamin E intake, but it was not statistically significant. Among women who did not take vitamin supplements, dietary vitamin E intake did show a significant inverse association with coronary heart disease risk. Women in the highest quintile of vitamin E intake had less than half the risk of death from coronary heart disease of women in the lowest quintile. Foods associated with reduced risk included margarine, nuts and seeds, and mayonnaise and creamy salad dressings. Intakes of vitamin A, vitamin C, and supplementary vitamin E did not appear to be associated with the risk of death from coronary disease. These findings suggest that vitamin E intake may be protective against coronary heart disease in postmenopausal women and that such women can lower their risk without using vitamin supplements. However, the authors could not rule out the possibility that vitamin E consumed in food might be a marker for other dietary factors associated with coronary risk. The lack of effect of vitamin E in supplements should be interpreted with caution because information on the duration of supplement use was not available for this cohort and because relatively few women used high-dose supplements of vitamin E.
Blood samples were taken from 50 veiled and 22 unveiled Kuwaiti volunteers between the ages of 14 and 45 (mean 35.5 years). All of the women had been pregnant no more than three times, were from the middle or high socioeconomic classes, did not have black skin, and included milk and milk products in their diets. Plasma levels of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (vitamin D) were found to be significantly lower in the veiled than in the unveiled women (mean 14.4 vs. 30.2 pmol/L). Serum inorganic phosphorus was also significantly lower in the veiled women, but no significant differences were observed in serum calcium or alkaline phosphatase levels. Forty-three (86%) of the veiled women, but none of the unveiled women, had below-normal levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D. Sixteen (320A) of the veiled women and two (9.1%) of the unveiled women had high serum alkaline phosphatase levels. Two previously unsuspected cases of vitamin D deficiency osteomalacia were identified in the veiled group. These two women, like the four previously identified cases, responded well to the administration of vitamin D, thus confirming that vitamin D deficiency was the cause of their osteomalacia.

Dictionaries define a safari as an overland journey or hunting expedition in Africa. The word safari is derived from the Arabic, safara, meaning `to travel. But how have safaris developed since the days depicted in old sepia photographs of men in pith helmets standing, rifle in hand, framed by the massive tusks of the elephant they have shot — tusks the like of which we will never see again? Safaris have always been and remain a romance with the wild. For the vast majority of people today, the motivation is to venture into unspoilt wilderness and experience nature up close, following the conservationists creed of `taking only photographs and leaving only footprints, rather than trophy hunting. Here we set out to consider the main options for photographic safaris. The picture is not comprehensive. Rwandas Parc de lAkagera for example, would rival any reserve in Africa for its beauty and the rich diversity of its wildlife, but it lies far off the beaten track and so is accessible to only the most determined travellers. Cameroon, Zaire, Malawi, Mozambique and Ethiopia similarly have fantastic opportunities for viewing wildlife but they too are outside the mainstream.

THE FINAL vacation days of summer are rapidly approaching. Traveling with pets can be great fun, but if your dog or cat hates to travel, the trip could be your worst nightmare, and hers, too. What arrangements do you need to make? Some dogs and cats do perfectly well in a boarding facility, while others do better when they stay in their own home. For a pet who will stay at home, a reliable friend or family member who can sleep over in your home is best for a dog. A cat will be OK alone for a short time with someone regularly visiting to give her food, water and some human companionship. If you dont have a friend or family member who can come do this for you, numerous bonded and insured pet sitting services are available.

ConcreteConcrete is a hardened building material created by combining a chemically inert mineral aggregate (usually sand, gravel, or crushed stone), a binder (natural or synthetic cement), chemical additives, and water. Although people commonly use the word cement as a synonym for concrete, the terms in fact denote different substances: cement, which encompasses a wide variety of fine-ground powders that harden when mixed with water, represents only one of several components in modern concrete. As concrete dries, it acquires a stone-like consistency that renders it ideal for constructing roads, bridges, water supply and sewage systems, factories, airports, railroads, waterways, mass transit systems, and other structures that comprise a substantial portion of the U.S. wealth. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), building such facilities is in itself one of the nations largest industries and represents about 10 percent of the gross national product. Over $4 billion worth of hydraulic cement, a variety which hardens under water, is produced annually in the United States for use in $20 billion worth of concrete construction. The value of all cement-based structures in the United States is in the trillions of dollarsroughly commensurate with the anticipated cost of repairing those structures over the next twenty years. The words cement and concrete are both of Latin origin, reflecting the likelihood that the ancient Romans were the first to use the substances. Many examples of Roman concrete construction remain in the countries that encircle the Mediterranean, where Roman builders had access to numerous natural cement deposits. Natural cement consists mainly of lime, derived from limestone and often combined with volcanic ash. It formed the basis of most civil engineering until the eighteenth century, when the first synthetic cements were developed. The earliest manmade cement, called hydraulic lime, was developed in 1756, when an English engineer named John Smeaton needed a strong material to rebuild the Eddystone lighthouse off the coast of Devon. Although the Romans had used hydraulic cement, the formula was lost from the collapse of their empire in the fifth century A.D. until Smeaton reinvented it. During the early nineteenth century several other Englishmen contributed to the refinement of synthetic cement, most notably Joseph Aspdin and Isaac Charles Johnson. In 1824 Aspdin took out a patent on a synthetic blend of limestone and clay which he called Portland cement because it resembled limestone quarried on the English Isle of Portland. However, Aspdins product was not as strong as that produced in 1850 by Johnson, whose formula served as the basis of the Portland cement that is still widely used today. Concrete made with Portland cement is considered superior to that made with natural cement because it is stronger, more durable, and of more consistent quality. According to the American Society of Testing of Materials (ASTM), Portland cement is made by mixing calcareous (consisting mostly of calcium carbonate) material such as limestone with silica-, alumina-, and iron oxide-containing materials. These substances are then burned until they fuse together, and the resulting admixture, or clinker, is ground to form Portland cement.

The LCT Show continues its newest idea of creating conference sessions personalized for fleet size and level of experience. This exclusive structure helps attendees smoothly navigate through 20 sessions so they can easily choose what is best for them and their company. Some of the top concerns plaguing the industry deal with insurance rates, employee training, price competition, and government regulations. The LCT Show has taken these vital concerns and has addressed them in their conference line-up.

“The average operator has been in business for 12 years,” according to LCT magazines June issue, the 2008 Fact Book. Although they may have more cumulative knowledge and experience compared to a start-up, theres always room for more education that will keep operators up to date and ahead of the times. “If operators want to be profitable, especially in this tight market, they need to be informed and strategic,” says Sara McLean, Publisher of LCT magazine. Allowing attendees to receive effective solutions to their most troubling dilemmas, at a speed built for their level of experience, the LCT Show strives to help their attendees through this difficult economy.

No retrospective would be complete without remembering the contributions of leading figures who have helped shape the industry. In this issue recognizing todays top contractors (see page 27), it is fitting to salute some of the pioneers from CONCRETE CONSTRUCTIONS early days. It was Corbettas dedication to the development of a strong concrete industry, however, that earned him the moniker Mr. Concrete. He was instrumental in founding several organizations, starting in 1950 with the Concrete Industry Board of New York City, which brought together concrete contractors, producers, architects, engineers, testing labs, cement manufacturers, and reinforcing steel producers.

Much maligned as a mousegun, the .380 ACP is generally chambered in rather pedestrian handguns. However, there are two distinctly superior pistols available for the cartridge–the Waither PPK and SIG P-232. Challenged on the upper end of the ballistic power spectrum by the new breed of miniaturized service-caliber pistols and on the low end by the mini .32s, the basic blow-back 9xl7mm– yes, the much maligned .380 ACP– retains a firm hold on its share of the concealable handgun market. While reviewers often report the locked breech mini-guns to be close in size to the Walther PPK, the height and cross sectional girth of these pistols remain significantly larger. You can engineer a short locked breech pistol, but not one that lies as flat as the straight-recoil .380s.
By the Middle Ages, in Rottweil, Germany, these dogs had been crossed with local sheepdogs to create the Rottweiler Metzgerhund, the Rottweil Butchers Dog. Butchers used these dogs to drive and guard their livestock as it made its way on foot from town to town. In the 19th Century, cattle-driving became illegal in Germany and the Rottweiler suffered a decline in popularity until 1914 when they were once again brought into use for the war, which proved their physical and mental abilities. The breed entered the United States in the 1930s and was accepted into their Kennel Club in 1935, being accepted by the British Kennel Club the following year. They are one of the most powerful and strong dogs in the world for their size.
There are just a few thousand tigers left in the wild, and mountain gorillas are down to a few hundred. With figures like these, its easy to overlook those less exotic animals closer to home that are facing extinction. But, while they might not grab the headlines, the plight of native British livestock breeds such as the bagot goat, the British lop pig, the boreray sheep and even the original Aberdeen angus beef cattle is no less critical. “Until agriculture became established as a semi-scientific business in the late 18th century, there werent any recognisable breeds, just types of animal that had adapted over time to their environment,” explains the RBST chairman and co-founder Lawrence Alderson, who defines an original - or native - breed as one where documentary evidence proves its continued existence over many years and DNA profiling shows that there has been no dilution of the original bloodline by cross-breeding. “Industrial development and artificial selection, however, made certain types of animal flourish and others disappear - not always because they werent economically viable. Sometimes it was just down to changing fashion,” he says.

The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Members will be asked to contribute ideas for a research agenda. The Cancer-Exercise Agenda: Opportunities in Applications Research

Twenty-five years ago, an entire desktop computers processing power handled less data than todays Palm Pilot(TM). Computers required highly skilled operators. The idea that practically every American would have a computer on his or her desk someday was utterly unbelievable, let alone the fact that one day computers would be carried in your briefcase, or even in your shirt pocket. The Internet, e-mail, computer– aided design, and countless other everyday tools would not exist without the computer. At the forefront of supercomputing are SGI and NASA. They teamed up early this year to install a 512-processor system based on SGIs Origin- 3800 system at NASAs Ames Research Center. The supercomputer is being used by NASA to develop spacecraft, and perform computational fluid dynamics, global climate modeling, and computational astrobiology. Today, computers define generations. The PC and the advent of the Internet have revolutionized the world, providing the ability to communicate with virtually anyone, anywhere, who has access to a computer. There are no barriers, no borders.

A sweet flying delta wing Theres something eye-catching about a “delta-wing” type of aircraft. The mystique of an airplane with no fuselage or empennage piques our curiosity and challenges our instincts concerning aerodynamics. The Laser Models Laser Arrow delta wing is one in a new line of models distributed by Great Planes, and I quickly accepted the offer to review it. The kit consists of several sheets of laser-cut balsa and light plywood. To minimize damage, the wood sheets are secured to the bottom of the box with cardboard tabs. The hardware package is complete and includes pinned hinges, screws, devises, control horns, a fuel tank and other assorted parts. There is also a Nyrod (for throttle) and threaded-wire pushrods. The Laser-Lock building technique is very interesting; no plan is provided, nor is one needed. Instead, the building process relies on accurately laser-cut parts and interlocking tab-and-slot construction to ensure proper alignment.

Statement on Reasons for Vote to Break a Tie, Speaker Myron Kowalsky, Saskatchewan, March 29, 2004. Background: On March 29, 2004 the question on the Address in Reply to the Speech from the Throne in the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly ended in a tie vote with 27 in favour and 27 against. The Speaker does not normally vote however he must do so in the case of a tie. Certain principles guide a casting vote and these were outlined in the following statement. Speaker Kowalsky: In parliamentary assemblies in the Westminster tradition, a central principle underlying the system is the impartiality of the Speaker. Both Erskine May and Beauchesne state the following: The principle that the Speaker votes only to break a tie is enshrined in both legislation and rules in the Legislative Assembly in Saskatchewan. The Legislative Assembly and Executive Council Act states as follows:

SolarAttics new pool heater uses hot attic air to heat swimming pools for only $10 a month. As it heats the pool, it cools the attic and reduces air conditioning costs. Friendly to the environment, it does not burn fossil fuels. In all instances, it substantially reduces a pool owners monthly utility costs. This is a stark environmental contrast to the typical pool heater which burns fossil fuels and can easily cost $300 a month to operate. It is also a stark visual contrast to solar panel heaters which require a massive panel area which occupies a large part of the roof. SolarAttics pool heater, already in 31 states, is expected to make huge waves as it challenges traditional pool industry professionals this week to rethink the issue of heating swimming pools.

First Topic. OK, my latest do-it-yourself project regarding speaker building is complete. Previously my main A/V system had a home-built center speaker that consisted of four Roy Allison designed AV-1 minispeakers assembled into a stand-mounted, triangular shaped configuration resembling the top half (top two feet) of either of my Allison IC-20 main-channel speakers. There were two front panels, each angled 45 degrees to the side from straight ahead, with a vertical MTTM driver array on each of them. The tweeters were Allison designs, but the 4.5-inch cone midrange drivers were built in the Far East for incorporation by Allison into the AV-1 units. The crossovers were basic second-order designs (high and low pass filtering) that Allison has traditionally used in many of his systems. The four 4.5-inch cones notwithstanding, this system was unable to go deep enough into the bass range to be operated full bandwidth, even as a center-channel speaker. However, rather than configure the center circuitry of my receiver to route its bass to my main systems Velodyne F1800II main subwoofer, I gave the channel its own dedicated subwoofer: basically a modified (by me) SVS 16-42 unit, powered and crossover controlled by a Hsu Research amp. The resulting center-channel performance was pretty good, but the system had several weaknesses. First, although the Allison tweeter is a great one, with a wide-angled radiation pattern in the top octave second to none, it is at its happiest if crossed over above 3.5 kHz. In the two-way Allison models, including the AV-1, the crossover point of the Ferrofluid cooled version of the tweeter is nearly an octave lower, at 2 kHz, and down that low the tweeter has the potential to have a bit more distortion with high-powered inputs than some might like. Although using four of the things in the array certainly helps out, I still prefer a higher crossover point, if only for power-handling advantages in the 2 kHz to 4 kHz range where a typically more solidly built midrange driver would be working in three-way Allison systems.

CATEGORY REVIEW * The freezer case is getting a little more crowded as consumers become acquainted with gelato and frozen custard. Amazingly, grocers are finding themselves having to make room in their freezer cases once again, as a new trend emerges in frozen desserts. Not surprisingly, it reflects consumers growing penchant for rich, decadent, full-flavor offerings. This time around, the products themselves - gelato and frozen custard - arent necessarily new. On the contrary, theyve been foodservice favorites in select regions for years. For the most part, however, the mainstream American consumer hasnt been exposed to them, particularly at retail.

ABSTRACT Policy makers in beach communities are faced with limited resources and continuing demand for public services, and must make difficult decisions about how to allocate the public funds entrusted to them. Those in charge of protecting and managing vital beach resources must justify their decisions in terms of benefits to the natural environment and demonstrate fiscal accountability if they wish to maintain public support. Often they are asked to justify their decisions in terms of the economic value that is generated for the community (Font, 2000). One of the primary economic benefits that these communities enjoy is spending related to beach tourism. Beach related tourist activity in the Northwest Florida area has long been a major source of employment for local residents, sales for local companies, and tax revenues for local government. Tourisms contribution to economic activity in the area is therefore an important consideration in community planning. Economic analyses that provide tangible estimates of these economic interdependencies and a better understanding of the role and importance of tourism in a regions economy are valuable to policy makers.

Each Blast Freezer Controller will control up eight blast cells. It will adjust suction pressure in the engine room, so that the compressors can use a higher suction pressure when the blast freezers are not being used, thus saving energy. It utilizes the intermittent cooling technique pioneered by Hench over 15 years ago at a California facility. Intermittent cooling reduces fan heat removal at the end of the blast cycle, thus saving energy.

WORKPLACE accidents will usually occur at the most inopportune time. Regardless of the cause of an accident, it is only a matter of time before the company, its insurer and professional accident investigators will be trying to sort out the facts in order to assess financial damages and determine the responsibility for the accident. However, in many cases risk managers do not take the appropriate steps to secure and protect the evidence that is available at the accident scene. Consequently, this accident-related evidence, which constitutes the only proof as to how the accident actually occurred, is often lost, thereby preventing its use in case exposure evaluation, negotiation settlement or litigation. As a result, risk managers must implement measures to ensure that a rapid, competent on-site accident investigation is conducted that secures the site and preserves important physical evidence. This type of approach, known as a fast response accident investigation, will optimize the investigations results and save key evidence, thereby resulting in the lowest possible settlement or litigation costs.
At a recent session of the Southeastern Regional Education Conference, Jim Williams, an attorney with Roberts Stevens Cogburn in Asheville, N.C., pointed out the value of a plan that immediately deals with accidents and helps assemble data. The risk manager is one of the first to know about a serious accident after it happens and should get to the product or accident as quickly as possible, said Mr. Williams. For starters, assembling information and taking photographs can be very useful in cases where a lawsuit could be brought after two or three years. At that point, there is no going back to examine the evidence. Charles Manning, Jr., president of Accident Reconstruction Analysis Inc. (ARAI), concurred. ARAI takes the initial evidence and uses it to reconstruct what actually happened at the scene of an accident. They use metallurgical testing, failure analysis and technical investigation of machinery to produce their results. It is possible to get accurate measurements, velocity, final resting places of vehicles and victims, he said. ARAI reconstructs accidents such as the case of a sailboat that hit power lines and caused the electrocution of its passengers. By reconstructing the situation with the same tide and wind conditions and the same type of boat, Mr. Mannings company was able to show that an experienced sailor would have been able to get the craft out of trouble. By videotaping the reconstructed incident from a variety of angles, Mr. Manning preserved evidence that could be of extreme importance to the power company in the event of future lawsuits. Auto accidents, products liability and elevator malfunctioning are other examples of cases that lend themselves to this type of analysis. As Mr, Manning points out, Risk managers must go out and get the evidence, but it is not necessary to do the expensive computer work in the beginning. Just get the evidence, do a little hand calculation and be prepared for a future problem. Complementing the discussion, Thomas A. Jenkins, of Ledford Legal Communications, presented the value of computer animation for courtroom presentation. Noting that statistics have shown only 5 percent of the population understands simple scientific evidence, Mr. Jenkins said it is vital to help people such as jurors understand difficult concepts.
Many of the families from the Chatsworth Metrolink train accident are still grieving over the loss of their loved ones, or still receiving care and treatment for themselves or family members. Due to the short timelines associated with filing claims and lawsuits against governmental entities, families and victims are forced to start dealing now with the legal issues associated with this accident. It has been reported that attorneys are calling victims, sending letters to victims, and even attempting to visit them in their churches.
